BC Aboriginal Provincial Championships & Athlete Development Camps

Events held in summer and fall of 2016 part of selection processes for Team BC for NAIG

The Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council (Partners Council) is pleased to announce the dates and locations of several events within the 2016 series of BC Aboriginal Provincial Championships and Athlete Development Camps.

Launched in 2011, the annual BC Aboriginal Provincial Championships and Camps were established to support Aboriginal athlete and coach development and support the creation of a strong, coordinated and competitive Team BC program. The majority of the events in the 2016 Championships & Camps will serve as a primary component of the talent identification and selection processes for Team BC for the 2017 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG).

The 2017 NAIG will be hosted in Toronto, Ontario, from July 16 to 23, 2017 and Team BC will be represented in 13 sports: archery, athletics (track & field), badminton, basketball, canoe/kayak, golf, lacrosse, rifle shooting, soccer, softball, swimming, volleyball and wrestling.

The following BC Aboriginal Provincial Championships and Camps are confirmed. More details regarding the Team BC Selection processes for each individual sport will be announced in the coming months as preparation and planning progresses.

PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIPS:
BC Aboriginal Provincial GOLF Championships August 7-9, 2016, Talking Rock Golf Course, Chase, BC

Hosted by Talking Rock Golf Course & Little Shuswap Band

The age categories listed below will be offered for both male and female players at the 2016 Championships o U13 (born 2003 – 2005)

o U13 (born 2003 – 2005)
o U15 (born 2001, 2002)
o U18 (born 1998 – 2000)

NOTE: The 2017 NAIG divisions for golf are U16 (born 2001 & later) and U19 (born 1998 & later). Team BC selection process details to be announced.

BC Aboriginal Provincial SOCCER Championships August 26-28, 2016, Prince George, BC

Hosted by Prince George Native Friendship Centre and Northern Sport Centre

Regional Teams for both male and female divisions to be entered into following age categories. Winning teams earn spot on Team BC for 2017 NAIG. Regional teams are selected through Regional Committee selection processes held in May and June. Contact your Regional Coordinator for details on regional team selection process (regional contact info below).

o U17 (born 1999-2000)

BC Aboriginal Provincial CANOE & KAYAK Championships September 17-18, 2016, Agassiz, BC

Hosted by Seabird Island First Nation Agassiz, BC

Championships consist of male and female singles, doubles and mixed doubles categories for both canoe and kayak events.

Age divisions for 2016 BC Aboriginal Provincial Canoe & Kayak Championships:

o U13 (born 2003 – 2005)

o U15 (born 2001 – 2002)

o U18 (born 1998 to 2000

Marathon canoes and sprint kayaks provided by event hosts/partners. Team BC selection process details to be announced.

PROVINCIAL CAMPS:
 
BC Aboriginal Provincial LACROSSE Camp August 13-14, 2016, Kamloops, BC
Hosted by Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc at Memorial Arena
  • Team BC will be recruiting for male lacrosse players born in years 1998 to 2003. 
  • 2017 NAIG age categories for lacrosse are U16 (born 2001 & later) and U19 (born 1998 & later). 
  • Team BC selection process details to be announced. 

BC Aboriginal Provincial SOFTBALL Camps

  • Team BC will be recruiting for male and female softball players born in years 1998 to 2003.   
  • 2017 NAIG age categories for softball are U16 (born 2001 & later) and U19 (born 1998 & later)  Attend the camp nearest to you.

BC Aboriginal Provincial VOLLEYBALL Camps

Northern BC Camp – Prince George August 26-27, 2016

Southern BC Camp- North Vancouver August 28-29, 2016

  • Team BC will be recruiting for female volleyball players born in years 1998 to 2003. 
  • 2017 NAIG age categories for volleyball are U16 (born 2001 & later) and U19 (born 1998 & later). 

BC Aboriginal Basketball Camps (Regional (Phase 1) & Provincial (Phase 2)) Hosted by Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc at Tournament Capital Centre

REGIONAL CAMPS – Locations TBC October 15-16 or October 22-23, 2016

PROVINCIAL (INVITATIONAL) CAMP December 19-21, 2016

  • Each of the six regions will host a Regional Basketball Camp on either the weekend of October 15-16 or October 22-23.  Locations to be confirmed.  Athletes identified at Regional Camps for advancement to next phase will be invited to the BC Aboriginal Provincial Basketball Selection Camp (invitation only) held Monday, December 19 to Wednesday, December 21 at the Tournament Capital Centre, Kamloops, BC.  
  • Team BC will be recruiting for male and female basketball players born in years 1998 to 2005. 
  • 2017 NAIG age categories for basketball are U14 (born 2003 & later); U16 (born 2001 & later) and U19 (born 1998 & later). 
  • Team BC selection process details to be announced.

Please note the details for Provincial Camps in the sports of archery, athletics, badminton, rifle shooting, swimming, and wrestling will be announced at a later date.

Background on the Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council
The Partners Council is a consortium of the First Nations Health Authority, BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres, and Métis Nation BC. The overarching mission of the Partners Council is to improve the health outcomes of Aboriginal people throughout British Columbia by supporting and encouraging physically active communities and by expanding access to sports and recreation opportunities. The Partners Council has established six regions across BC inclusive of the Northwest, Northeast, Interior, Fraser, Vancouver Coastal, and Vancouver Island.
