Team BC Announces Flag Bearers for the 2023 NAIG

Halifax, NS – Jayden Broadfoot and Leah Parker carried the British Columbia and Team BC flags into the Opening Ceremony of the 2023 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG). “These two athletes were nominated to be flag bearers by their coaches, and we are so honoured to have them represent British Columbia by leading our contingent into the Opening Ceremony and throughout the entirety of the 2023 North American Indigenous Games,” said Team BC, Chef de Mission, Michelle Webster. “It's a great honor to represent my team, community and province at the North American Indigenous Games,” said Jayden. Jayden is proud to be Secwepemc and currently lives in Tkemlups te Secwepemc (Kamloops BC). In addition to representing Team BC on the 16U Male Basketball Team, Jayden is an extraordinary individual and honour roll student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities. As team captain, he has become a role model at his school in Kamloops. His dedication extends beyond basketball, as he actively contributes to community by volunteering at events and supporting elders. “I feel very honored to be chosen as a flag bearer for Team BC. It is a privilege to represent my province and also a privilege to participate in the NAIG as it celebrates and showcases the athletic achievements of Indigenous youth,” stated Leah. Leah is from Prince George and is a member of the Métis Nation BC, and she will be representing Team BC on the 19U Female Volleyball Team. Her determination and skills have led her to compete at the Provincial Club Championships earning a bronze medal in Division 1. Nominations were open to Indigenous athletes under the age of 25 who have competed in performance sport, demonstrated a commitment to their education and culture, and have promoted healthy and active lifestyles. Six athletes were selected from each region, resulting in 36 regional recipients. Of the 36 regional recipients, 10 athletes were selected as provincial recipients for the 2021 Provincial Awards. DEADLINE EXTENDED - Friday, October 29, 2021 @ 11:59 pm I·SPARC is seeking volunteers to serve on its PROVINCIAL SPORT COMMITTEES. The Provincial Sport Committees help guide and oversee the planning and delivery of the annual series of BC Indigenous Provincial Championships or Athlete Development Camps as well as the athlete and coach selection processes in preparation for BC’s participation in either the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) or the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships (NAHC). There is a Provincial Committee for each of the following sports: NAIG – archery, athletics (track & field, cross-country), badminton, basketball, canoe-kayak, golf, lacrosse, rifle shooting, soccer, softball, swimming, volleyball, wrestling NAHC – ice hockey The NEW DEADLINE TO APPLY is midnight, Friday, October 29, 2021. MEMBERSHIP Committee members generally fulfill one or more of the following criteria: Relevant sport technical knowledge/background; Experience in competitive sport; either as an athlete, coach, official and/or working and/or volunteering in the sport delivery system (e.g. coaching, officiating, coordinating/administering programs, etc.); Experience in Indigenous sport development (e.g. the NAIG or NAHC, or other Indigenous community and competitive sport).
