BC Indigenous Provincial Championships & Athlete Development Camps
The BC Aboriginal Provincial Championships and Athlete Development Camps series is an important component of the Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity & Recreation Council’s Provincial Strategy. The series was designed to support the effort to develop a consistent, coordinated Aboriginal Team BC program and better prepare athletes and coaches for upcoming North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) and other elite competitions.
The events provide a unique opportunity for Aboriginal athletes and coaches from First Nations, Métis Chartered Communities and Friendship Centres throughout the province to gather and participate or compete in events that promote sport excellence while celebrating cultural unity and pride. The championships and development camps are generally held through the summer and fall in a variety of communities across British Columbia.
The 2018/19 Host Application Process has been launched for First Nations, Métis Chartered Communities, Friendship Centres, and Indigenous organizations to apply to host event(s) within the 2018/19 series of BC Indigenous Provincial Championships and Athlete Development Camps. Successful community hosts will be awarded a Hosting Grant to help offset the majority, if not all, of the event operating costs. Communities awarded a Provincial Camp will work in partnership with I·SPARC’s Provincial Coordinator, Performance Sport, and the Provincial Sport Committee in the delivery of the event. The Development Camps are to be held primarily in the Fall/Winter of 2017/18 in a variety of communities across British Columbia.
These events have been strategically established to support Indigenous athlete development in sports featured in the North American Indigenous Games (NAIG). The Provincial Camps series will consist of a provincial athlete development camp delivered for each of the following sports:
- 3-D Archery*
- Athletics (Track & Field)
- Rifle Shooting*
*3-D Archery and Rifle Shooting will be a combined Camp and Championships format; Day 1 will be Skills Development and Day 2 will be a Championship.
The Provincial Championships series will consist of a provincial championship delivered for each of the following sports:
(Note: for the sport of basketball, I∙SPARC recognizes the annual Jr. All-Native Basketball Tournament as the provincial championships for youth basketball. I∙SPARC does not oversee this event, however, we provide funding support to the event).
