*Please note: Considering the rapidly changing situation, I·SPARC made the decision March 12, 2020 to suspend all program activities indefinitely in order to do our part in reducing the potential exposure of COVID-19 to participants and communities, especially our most vulnerable community members. As of March 25, 2020, it has also been confirmed that the Halifax 2020 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) are being postponed to the summer of 2021 (details yet to be announced).

The full NAIG Council and Halifax 2020 NAIG statement on COVID-19 and the decision to postpone the Games to 2021 can be found here: NAIG 2020 Postpones July Games.

Please note I·SPARC will follow-up with new information as it develops including revised plans for Team BC’s preparations going forward once the revisions are determined. We thank you for your patience at this time. The Team BC selection process for athletes to represent the province in the sport of athletics at the 2020 North American Indigenous Games is now open.

Athletes who are selected will compete at the Games, which will be held in Halifax, Nova Scotia from July 12 to 19, 2020.

Team BC is seeking up to a maximum of eight male and eight female athletes for each age category to compete at 2020 NAIG.

NAIG Athletics Age Categories

14U = 2006 & later

16U = 2004 & later

19U = 2001 & later

*For reasons of safety and maturity, Team BC is seeking athletes born no later than 2007

To find out more about the athlete selection process, please read the document that outlines the criteria by clicking the link ATH – TeamBC 2020 NAIG (Athletics) Athlete Selection Process – (LMS).

Athletes interested in Team BC for NAIG must submit their application and performance results (plus two references – one sport and one character) via the Athlete Expression of Interest form (link below). Deadline to apply is 4 pm on March 31, 2020.

Find the Team BC Competitive Results Form (to accompany the expression of interest) by clicking here.

Athletic athletes (Track & Field & Cross-Country) are encouraged to attend the 2020 BC Indigenous Provincial Athletics Development Camp if possible where the Team BC coaches will facilitate a one day development camp that includes a running and throwing clinic. Following the camp, the Van Ryswick Invitational event is being held at the Tournament Capital Centre (optional). You can use competition results at this event as part of your Team BC application (i.e. Expression of Interest).

The 2020 BC Indigenous Athletic Development Camp serves as an opportunity for Team BC coaching staff to meet interested youth, and observe and evaluate their skills and technique. Attendance at the BC Indigenous Provincial Athletic Development Camp is not mandatory and does not automatically enter a youth into consideration for Team BC. Athletes will still be required to complete a formal Athlete Expression of Interest form.

BC Indigenous Provincial Athletic Development Camp is being hosted as follows:
February 28, 2020 – Kamloops, BC; Hosted in partnership with Tk’emlúps te Secwepemc, BC Athletics and with the support of the Province of BC
