In 2024, I·SPARC introduced its inaugural Pathways, Indigenous Sport Leadership Gatherings. These in-person gatherings are designed to empower Indigenous community leaders and advocates in the fields of sport, recreation, youth, health, and education. Pathways took the model of previous Regional Engagement Meetings, and looked to build on these by developing a more collaborative and engaging 1-day session for participants.
Workshops are delivered by both I·SPARC and its partners, which include valuable education and training and/or certification opportunities. In 2024, the seminars included:
- Athletic Taping Course: This course is an introduction to taping techniques used in a sport setting.
- Addressing Racism in Sport: This workshop helps leaders and coaches identify and address racism in sports environments.
- Concussion Awareness & Management.
- The Holistic Model: This workshop introduces leaders and coaches to culturally relevant practices for creating a positive, inclusive environment for Indigenous participants.
In 2024, I·SPARC partnered with the BC Regional Sport Alliance in hosting these two events. The first was held in Victoria, in partnership with the Pacific Institute for Sport Education (PISE) and the second took place in Langley, in partnership with PacificSport Fraser Valley.
In support of the Pathways events, a bespoke event identity was created in partnership with Ryan Johnston, a Squamish First Nation graphic designer, who shared his inspiration behind the design. “The hand of knowledge and culture is passed down to the next generation, igniting their passion and opening a world of possibilities for them to explore,” said Johnston. “The Coast Salish hand is passing culture and teachings to the next generation’s participant, who is jumping into action ready to explore their own unique pathways!”
Planning for future Pathways: Indigenous Sport Leadership Gatherings are already underway. Please ensure you join I·SPARC’s mailing list and follow I·SPARC on social media for future announcements.
