Indigenous Cultural Safety

The goal of I∙SPARC’s Indigenous Cultural Safety training is to develop and promote cultural learning opportunities for sport organizations embarking on their reconciliation journey. The aim is to facilitate the design and delivery of culturally relevant and appropriate community-based sport programs for Indigenous participants, ultimately fostering safer and more inclusive spaces within mainstream sports and physical activities.

Established with the purpose of enhancing the health outcomes of Indigenous people, I∙SPARC supports and encourages physically active individuals, families, and communities. The organization believes in providing equal opportunities for all to engage in these activities in a safe, inclusive, and culturally relevant manner. By prioritizing cultural safety, both at the individual and organizational levels, participants can deepen their understanding of Indigenous peoples and their roles in the reconciliation process.

Recognizing the importance of belonging and inclusion in promoting well-being and community connection, I∙SPARC acknowledges the systemic and cultural barriers that often hinder Indigenous people’s participation in sports and recreational activities. These barriers may include historical trauma, limited access to facilities and coaches, and disparities in funding.

Training

The Indigenous Cultural Safety training offered by I∙SPARC is a fully funded learning experience aimed at providing valuable insights into Indigenous perspectives on sport, exercise, and wellness. Led by experts in Indigenous culture and sport, including Knowledge Keepers and cultural safety specialists, the training sessions offer a unique opportunity to understand the intersection of sport, physical activity, and culture. By participating in these sessions, sport leaders can enhance their understanding and build stronger relationships with Indigenous athletes and communities.

The comprehensive training program, which includes both online and in-person sessions, is designed to empower participants to make informed decisions and drive future development and growth within Provincial Sport Organizations. Participants can expect to participate in a multiphase training approach, which includes online and in-person training.

For any inquiries, please contact ICS@isparc.ca. I∙SPARC looks forward to welcoming participants to its training program! For upcoming sessions or to express your organization’s interest in an ICS Training session click here.

What ICS participants had to say:

“What a powerful course!”

Thank you for all the work in facilitating this training. It has been a very positive (although difficult at times) experience for me.

“Ideally, by having instructors and faculty embark on this life-long learning, it creates a safe or ‘safer’ environment for Indigenous students but also becomes the foundation for non-Indigenous and multi-racial students to share safe spaces amongst each other.”  – Carl Everitt, Associate Dean (Camosun College)

“It was very helpful to hear such a wide range of lived experiences from the I∙SPARC staff as well as the elders. It provided me with new insights and understanding.”

“I am more aware of the role I play in creating the environment I live and work in, and the responsibility I have to expand my own worldview.”
