Halifax, NS – Jayden Broadfoot and Leah Parker carried the British Columbia and Team BC flags into the Opening Ceremony of the 2023 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG). “These two athletes were nominated to be flag bearers by their coaches, and we are so honoured to have them represent British Columbia by leading our contingent into the Opening Ceremony and throughout the entirety of the 2023 North American Indigenous Games,” said Team BC, Chef de Mission, Michelle Webster.

“It’s a great honor to represent my team, community and province at the North American Indigenous Games,” said Jayden. Jayden is proud to be Secwepemc and currently lives in Tkemlups te Secwepemc (Kamloops BC). In addition to representing Team BC on the 16U Male Basketball Team, Jayden is an extraordinary individual and honour roll student who has demonstrated outstanding leadership qualities. As team captain, he has become a role model at his school in Kamloops. His dedication extends beyond basketball, as he actively contributes to community by volunteering at events and supporting elders.

“I feel very honored to be chosen as a flag bearer for Team BC. It is a privilege to represent my province and also a privilege to participate in the NAIG as it celebrates and showcases the athletic achievements of Indigenous youth,” stated Leah. Leah is from Prince George and is a member of the Métis Nation BC, and she will be representing Team BC on the 19U Female Volleyball Team. Her determination and skills have led her to compete at the Provincial Club Championships earning a bronze medal in Division 1. And as an emerging coach, she has mentored young athletes, inspiring them to reach their full potential.

Leah and Jayden truly epitomize Team BC athletes, showcasing excellence in their sports and daily lives.

Team BC Background 
The Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity & Recreation Council (I·SPARC) is responsible for managing the Team BC Program for the North American Indigenous Games. Through the support and oversight of its Provincial Sport Committees, Team BC Mission Staff and I·SPARC’s leadership, I·SPARC has established a Team BC program and comprehensive provincial process to select athletes and coaches that will compete on behalf of British Columbia in the 2023 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG). For the 2023 NAIG, over 500 Indigenous athletes and coaches have been selected to represent British Columbia in the following 14 sports: 3D Archery, Athletics (Track & Field, Cross-Country), Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Canoe/Kayak, Golf, Lacrosse (Box), Rifle Shooting, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Volleyball, Wrestling.
