Welcome to the official webpage of Team BC NAIG! The 2023 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) were held in Kjipuktuk (Halifax), Nova Scotia within the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq. After a week of competitions at the 2023 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG), Team BC delivered an exceptional performance securing an impressive total of 159 medals (53 gold, 62 silver, 44 bronze) across 14 sports. Throughout the NAIG, Team BC showcased the exceptional talent of Indigenous athletes from across BC. The outstanding performances earned Team BC second place in the overall team standings – just 17 medals behind Team Saskatchewan, and 31 medals ahead of Team Ontario.
The Team BC NAIG program provided 535 Indigenous athletes, coaches, and mission staff from across BC with an incredible opportunity to experience a major international sport competition and to share and celebrate their cultural heritages with other youth from across the continent.
The Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity & Recreation Council delivers an annual series of BC Indigenous Provincial Championships and Athlete Development Camps in various communities across the province. These events were strategically established to support athlete and coaching development in communities across the province and provide an ideal opportunity to conduct talent identification for Team BC. The 2022/23 season of BC Indigenous Provincial Championships and Athlete Development Camps served as the primary component of the talent identification by which athletes and coaches were selected to represent BC at the Halifax 2023 NAIG.
We are very excited to announce that Calgary has been chosen to host the 2027 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG)!

About NAIG
The North American Indigenous Games is an international multi-sport event, involving North American Indigenous athletes from Canada and the USA, staged intermittently since 1990. The Games are governed by the North American Indigenous Games Council, a council of representatives from 13 provinces and territories in Canada and 13 regions in the United States.
The North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) promotes and encourages the cultural, spiritual and traditional values of the peoples it is representing. In their activities they promote and encourage holistic individual development that assures mental, physical, emotional and spiritual growth. The NAIG is now exclusively an event for youth athletes aged approximately 13- to 19 years.
The first Indigenous Games were held in 1990 in Edmonton, Alberta, followed by Games in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan in 1993; Blaine, Minnesota in 1995; Victoria, British Columbia in 1997; Winnipeg, Manitoba in 2002; and Denver, Colorado in 2006; and Cowichan (Duncan) in 2008. At the 2014 NAIG in Regina, Saskatchewan, Team BC made history as the first team to be awarded both the Overall Team Award (for most medals) and the John Fletcher Spirit Award for being voted team with most integrity and sportsmanship.
