National Strategy Highlights Path Forward for Indigenous Sport and Recreation

A national strategy led by the Aboriginal Sport Circle is setting out a 10-year path to strengthen Indigenous leadership, participation, and partnerships in sport, physical activity, and recreation across Canada.

Released as part of ongoing efforts to advance Indigenous priorities in sport, The Spirit of Sport – Active Together outlines how Indigenous and non-Indigenous organizations can work together through respectful partnership and sustained collaboration.

The Strategy emphasizes the importance of honouring Indigenous cultures and traditions while creating meaningful opportunities for Indigenous Peoples of all ages, abilities, and regions to participate and thrive.

During National Indigenous History Month, sport and physical activity organizations are being encouraged to learn more about the Strategy and consider how they can support its priorities in their own communities.

Five focus areas guide the work

The National Strategy is organized around five connected focus areas designed to support long-term change:

  1. Advocacy and awareness: Helping more people understand Indigenous priorities and leadership in sport.
  2. Relationships and partnerships: Building trust and working together with respect.
  3. Leadership and capacity building: Supporting Indigenous leadership and community-led action.
  4. Participation: Creating welcoming and meaningful opportunities to take part.
  5. Sustainable investments: Making sure support is long-term and reliable.

Together, these focus areas are intended to help organizations build stronger relationships, support Indigenous-led action, and create more inclusive sport and recreation spaces.

The Aboriginal Sport Circle is stewarding the Strategy, but its success depends on shared commitment from organizations and partners across sectors.

The Strategy calls on communities, organizations, and partners to listen, learn, and work together to help Indigenous Peoples and communities flourish through sport, physical activity, and recreation. Learn more by clicking on image below to read The Spirit of Sport – Active Together.
