ISPARC seeking volunteer Team BC coaches for Halifax 2020 North American Indigenous Games

Tuesday, December 18, 2018 – ISPARC is seeking committed and enthusiastic sport leaders for volunteer coach positions to serve on Team BC in various sports for the 2020 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) to be held in Halifax, July 12-18, 2020.

ISPARC is the recognized Indigenous Sport body that oversees the operations of Team BC for the NAIG. Team BC is led and managed by the Team BC Chef de Mission and Mission Staff, whose main responsibility will be to oversee all aspects of team operations and logistics. BC’s contingent will include over 500 athletes, coaches participating in 13 sports.

Working together with ISPARC and the respective Provincial Indigenous Sport Committee, volunteer coaching staff play a lead role in the selection, training, supervision, and guidance of athletes attending the Games. The BC Indigenous Provincial Championships and Athlete Development Camps held in the 2019/20 season beginning August 2019 will be utilized as either athlete talent identification/development events or as selection events for Team BC’s preparation for 2020 NAIG.

About the NAIG – Age Categories & Sports
The NAIG is an international multi-sport event, involving North American Indigenous athletes from 13 provinces and territories Canada and 13 regions in the United States staged intermittently since 1990. The Games bring together over 5,000 athletes and coaches and cultural performers. The chart below contains the general information on the sports and expected age categories for the 2020 NAIG. The sports and age categories are based on 2017 NAIG and have not yet been approved by the NAIG Council. These should be considered for informational and pre-planning purposes only.

About Team BC
ISPARC is responsible for managing the Team BC Program for the NAIG. Through the support and oversight of a Team BC Work Group and Provincial Sport Committees, ISPARC has established a coordinated Team BC program that includes the development of a comprehensive process to select the 500 Indigenous athletes, coaches, managers, chaperones and mission staff to represent British Columbia at the NAIG. The ISPARC series of 2019/20 BC Indigenous Provincial Championships & Camps will serve as the primary talent identification and athlete selection events.
