Principles

The Aboriginal Sport Circle is committed to developing sport that fosters the development of the whole individual. In addition to their coach achievements, recipients will have demonstrated a personal commitment to the principles of sportsmanship and fair play, as well as to being a positive role model. They will also have demonstrated a commitment towards living a holistic lifestyle – one that develops their physical, mental, cultural and spiritual capacities.

Eligibility

The Awards honours the accomplishments of a coach within a given program year (September 1st to August 31st). Applicants must meet the following criteria to be eligible as nominees:

  • Applicants must be Indigenous (First Nations, Inuit, Métis).
  • Applicants must be active within the year of nomination (September 1st 2018-August 31st 2019).
  • Applicants must demonstrate sportsmanship, fair play and ethics in sport
  • Applicants must complete a nomination package and submit to the Aboriginal Sport Circle on or before September 13th at 11:59 E.S.T. (Ottawa).

Nominations

Nomination information to include the following:

General

  • Nominee’s name, age, gender, address, telephone number, sport(s) nominated for, and number of years
  • Level of competition(s) achieved as a coach (i.e. community, regional, provincial, national, or international).
  • 4-5 high resolution photos of the nominee coaching their

Detailed description

Nominations must include supporting narrative documenting how the nominee displays the following qualities:

1. Shows a personal commitment to his/her coach development

  • Identify training or professional development that nominee has maintained and cite improvements from this training or professional

2. Demonstrates a positive image as it relates to his/her role as an Indigenous coach

  • Provide examples or testimonials of how the nominee’s conduct reflects the principles of fair play and sportsmanship as it specifically relates to the sport, officials, and the
  • Provide three written testimonials from program leaders, parents, athletes and/or Indigenous community as to the nominee’s positive

3. Demonstrates a commitment to a holistic lifestyle by maintaining a balanced physical, mental, cultural, and spiritual outlook

  • Provide up to three testimonials from program leaders, parents, athletes and

4. Personal achievements

  • List any coach awards or levels of achievement that the nominee has received. Proof of achievements is requested (i.e., highest level of competition coached at top ranking and results, MVC and other accomplishments).

Awards

Two (2) awards will be presented, one (1) male award and one (1) female. Coaches will be selected from the nominees and will be presented with their award at the 2019 Petro-Canada Sport Leadership Awards Gala on Friday, November 8, 2019 in Richmond, British Columbia.

2019 National Coaching Award Selection Criteria

The criteria for the selection will be based on:

  • The coach’s highest level of
  • The coach’s ranking/results.
  • Other accomplishments (MVC, ).
  • Commitment to professional development.
  • Positive role model in sport and Indigenous
  • Demonstration of fair play and
  • Holistic balance (Physical, mental, emotional, cultural, spiritual).

The national selection will be announced by October 1st, in preparation for the 2019 Petro- Canada Sport Leadership Awards Gala on Friday, November, 8, 2019 in Richmond, BC.

How do you nominate a coach…Three easy steps:

Complete a supporting narrative

STEP #3

Email or process the online application that includes the Nomination Form and narratives to the Aboriginal Sport Circle.

National Award Presentations

In order to profile the award the national awards will be made at the 2019 Petro-Canada Sport Leadership Awards Gala, November 8, 2019 in Richmond, BC

The two national recipients will receive the following:

  1. All expenses paid round trip to Richmond to accept the national award;
  2. A custom-made National Indigenous Coaching Award;
  3. A $1500 bursary to support coach development opportunities
