FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Vancouver Coastal Honours Recipients of the 2016 Premier’s Awards for Aboriginal Youth Excellence in Sport Eight Outstanding Aboriginal Athletes Receive Prestigious Award Vancouver, B.C. (November 17, 2016) – The 2016 Premier’s Awards for Aboriginal Youth Excellence in Sport were presented this evening to eight outstanding Aboriginal youth athletes from British Columbia’s Vancouver Coastal Region. The Awards were presented by Sam Sullivan, MLA for Vancouver-False Creek, during a formal celebration held at the Vancouver Aboriginal Friendship Centre. The Vancouver Coastal region is the fourth of the Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council’s six regions to honour Aboriginal athletes through this prestigious province-wide awards program. The Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council, in collaboration with the Province of British Columbia, launched the regional nomination process in September 2016, receiving more than 130 nominations from across the province for Aboriginal athletes under 25 years of age who have achieved excellence in performance sport, are regarded for their leadership qualities, are committed to higher education, and are recognized as community role models both on and off the field of play. A total of 47 recipients were chosen within the Partners Council’s six regions – Northeast, Northwest, Interior, Fraser, Vancouver Coastal, and Vancouver Island. Welcome to the official webpage of Team BC NAIG! The 2023 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG) were held in Kjipuktuk (Halifax), Nova Scotia within the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq. After a week of competitions at the 2023 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG), Team BC delivered an exceptional performance securing an impressive total of 159 medals (53 gold, 62 silver, 44 bronze) across 14 sports. Throughout the NAIG, Team BC showcased the exceptional talent of Indigenous athletes from across BC. The outstanding performances earned Team BC second place in the overall team standings – just 17 medals behind Team Saskatchewan, and 31 medals ahead of Team Ontario. The Team BC NAIG program provided 535 Indigenous athletes, coaches, and mission staff from across BC with an incredible opportunity to experience a major international sport competition and to share and celebrate their cultural heritages with other youth from across the continent. The Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity & Recreation Council delivers an annual series of BC Indigenous Provincial Championships and Athlete Development Camps in various communities across the province. These events were strategically established to support athlete and coaching development in communities across the province and provide an ideal opportunity to conduct talent identification for Team BC. The 2022/23 season of BC Indigenous Provincial Championships and Athlete Development Camps served as the primary component of the talent identification by which athletes and coaches were selected to represent BC at the Halifax 2023 NAIG.  We are very excited to announce that Calgary has been chosen to host the 2027 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG)! Team BC won medals in 12 out of the 13 sports in which it competed which put the team in first place, 12 medals ahead of Team Saskatchewan. This is the second time Team BC has won the Overall Team Title (awarded to the team with the highest number of medals won) at the NAIG. Premier’s Awards For Aboriginal Youth Excellence in Sport Recipients 2015

  The inaugural Premier’s Awards for Aboriginal Youth Excellence in Sport were presented during the Gathering Our Voices conference in Victoria on March 21st, 2016. Twelve recipients crossed the stage in front of 2,000 of their peers to accept the awards for outstanding achievements by Aboriginal youth athletes throughout the province. More than 75 nominations were put forward recognizing those who excelled in performance sport, displayed strong leadership qualities, were committed to higher education, and served as community role models both on and off the field of play. The awards were developed in partnership with the Aboriginal Sport, Recreation & Physical Activity Partners Council, which is made up of the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres, First Nations Health Authority and Metis BC Nation. To encourage the spirit of Aboriginal athletes in subsequent years, those training and competing in performance sport will be invited to apply for regional awards. From these regional recipients, individuals will be chosen through the Provincial award process. NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release July 26, 2014 FEMALE GOLFERS SOAR ABOVE THE FIELD U16 girls’ softball end the day with gold REGINA, SK – Kylie Jack, Rachelle Nielsen and Wyatt Brook win gold on the golf course for Team BC! After three rounds at the Tor Hill Golf Course, Kylie’s total score was 338, an amazing 44 shots ahead of second place in the female U17 division. Rachelle put together three consistent rounds for a total score of 241, saving her best round for last and distancing herself from the pack. She finished with a 29-shot victory earning a gold medal. Wyatt Brook started the final round tied for first and played a solid round, beating his nearest competitor by three strokes for a total score of 243. “In the game that is usually played by individuals, we created a team and became a family,” said Team BC Golf Coach Frank Antoine. “Our athletes grew as people and golfers and we created memories to last a lifetime.” Incorporating traditional protocol, they started their day with a prayer and song, ended each day with a group hug and gave traditional names that recognized each individual. “Our athletes gained confidence and were able to handle adversity on the course because of the support they felt from their teammates,” Coach Antoine concluded. The U16 girls’ softball team won gold in the final game against Saskatchewan. BC led by two after the first inning. They fell behind by two at the end of the third but scored two runs to tie it at 4-4. NEWS RELEASE For Immediate Release July 24, 2014 TEAM BC ALL FIRED UP AFTER CLAIMING 19 MEDALS AT THE RANGE Sisters win gold in athletics, girls’ volleyball move to playoffs REGINA, SK –Team BC shooters claim 19 of 24 possible medals after two days of competitions! “This is the best performance of Team BC rifle team in the history of the Games,” said Lara Mussell, Team BC Chef de Mission. Team BC won an extraordinary seven gold medals, six silver and six bronze including triple gold-medalist Paige Mussell winning 3P, prone and overall leader of the 12 shooters in the U16 female category. Teammate Matthew Britton won gold in U16 male 3P and overall in his category as well as silver for U16 male prone. The Aboriginal Sport, Recreation and Physical Activity Partners Council started hosting provincial camps and rifle championships throughout British Columbia three years ago as an introduction to rifle. Many of the athletes on the rifle team attended at least one of the camps leading to a very successful final standing at the 2014 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG). Once the rifle team was selected, athletes had a successful showing at the BC Provincial Small Bore Championship in Campbell River and attended three training camps in preparation for their participation at NAIG. Team BC’s swim team took lead at the Kinsmen Sportsplex in Moose Jaw, claiming 27 medals—15 gold, eight silver and four bronze. They have one more day of events on Thursday. Rylee Mitchell’s javelin toss wins gold by 15.8 meters REGINA, SK – All 16 Team BC swimmers win medals on the first day of competitions—22 swimming medals in total! “We took the cue from the rest of Team BC,” said Head Coach, Leanne Sirup. “Our teams are performing so well, we had to step up too.” And they dove right in with 20 personal bests out of 33 events at the Kinsmen Sportsplex in Moose Jaw. Swimming competitions continue Thursday. Rylee Mitchell started the medal count for athletics today with a gold-winning javelin toss landing at 54.87 meters; 15.8 meters ahead of his next opponent! Three gold medals followed from Mateya Haintz in U14 female shot put, Jake Firlotte in U16 male 100m dash, and Begiizhik Nahwegahbow in U16 female 100m. Malyn Morven, U19 female 100m and Brayden McCall, U19 male javelin both won silver bringing the athletics’ medal count to six for day one.
