Six Outstanding Indigenous Athletes Receive Prestigious Award April 27, 2021 - The Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation Council (I·SPARC) is pleased to announce the six outstanding athletes named as the Vancouver Island regional recipients of the 2020 Premier’s Awards for Indigenous Youth Excellence in Sport. Jakob Brager, 18, Swimming, Nanaimo, Mid-Island Métis Ellashani George, 16, War Canoe and Soccer, Duncan, Oneida Nation of the Thames Megan McCool, 17, Smallbore Rifle, Victoria, Métis Nation BC Tristan Thomas, 15, Soccer, Nanaimo, Snuneymuxw First Nation Willem Whitehead, 15, Lacrosse, Hockey, Big Canoe and Basketball, Qualicum, We Wai Kai Nation Kristine Williams, 19, Volleyball and Basketball, Duncan, Cowichan Tribes I·SPARC, in collaboration with the Province of British Columbia, launched the regional nomination process in late 2020, receiving nominations from each of I·SPARC’s six regions (Fraser, Interior, Northeast, Northwest, Vancouver Coastal, and Vancouver Island) for Indigenous athletes, under 25 years of age, who are competing in performance sport, and demonstrating a commitment to their education, culture, and promoting healthy and active lifestyles. “Congratulations to all the regional winners of the Premier’s Awards for Indigenous Youth Excellence in Sport,” said Melanie Mark, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture and Sport. “I’m so proud of your accomplishments both on the field and in your community. Announcing Provincial Recipients of the Premier’s Awards for Indigenous Youth Excellence in Sport 10 Outstanding Indigenous Athletes Receive Prestigious Award Victoria, BC (June 18, 2020) – The Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation Council (I·SPARC), in partnership with the Province of British Columbia, is pleased to announce the selection of 10 outstanding Indigenous athletes for the 2019 Premier’s Awards for Indigenous Youth Excellence in Sport. The provincial ceremony was scheduled to take place in March during the Gathering Our Voices Indigenous Youth Leadership Training in Kamloops, however, plans were abruptly put on hold due to the impacts of the global COVID-19 pandemic. I·SPARC, in collaboration with the Province of British Columbia, created these awards to highlight the incredible achievements of Indigenous youth athletes throughout the province by honouring their excellence in performance sport, commitment to their education, the positive role they play in their communities, and ways in which they demonstrate leadership both on and off the field. From the 36 regional recipients selected last fall, a total of 10 athletes have been selected to receive the provincial award, representing the diversity across I·SPARC’s six regions. Indigenous athletes invited to apply for Team BC The Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation Council (I·SPARC) is now accepting applications from athletes who wish to represent Team BC at the Halifax 2020 North American Indigenous Games (NAIG). Sports open for Athlete Expression of Interest applications include archery (deadline is March 31), athletics (track and field - deadline is March 26), and swimming (deadline is Jan. 31) – with more information coming soon for badminton, golf, rifle shooting, and wrestling. The Games will be the largest multi-sport event ever held in Halifax, within the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq, presenting a unique opportunity to highlight Indigenous and Mi’kmaq culture. Over 5,000 participants from across North America will compete. Team BC’s contingent will provide 520 Indigenous athletes (First Nations, Métis, Inuit youth ages approximately 13 to 19), coaches and mission staff from across BC with an incredible once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience a major international sport competition and to share and celebrate their cultural heritages with other youth from across the continent. Team BC will compete in 13 sports at NAIG from July 12-19, 2020. “This is a great opportunity for our athletes to not only compete at an international competition in their sport but to also celebrate our cultural unity and pride,” said Lara Mussel Savage, Team BC Chef de Mission. “What makes NAIG unique is ensuring the connection between culture and sport in every aspect of the Games creating a powerful impact for all participants.” For the sports of canoe/kayak, volleyball and lacrosse, athletes have been advanced to Team BC development squads where final selections will be announced after the final spring camp. Top Indigenous Athletes to Receive the Prestigious Tom Longboat Award Ottawa, ON --- The Aboriginal Sport Circle is pleased to announce the 2019 winners of the prestigious Tom Longboat Award. Cameron Gayleard is named the male Aboriginal athlete of the year and Lyric Atchison named female Aboriginal athlete of year. The Tom Longboat Awards were established in 1951 to recognize Aboriginal athletes for their outstanding contributions to sport in Canada. The Awards provide a forum for acknowledging the growth and strength of the Aboriginal sport movement in Canada and its tremendous impact on sport development from community level participation to elite level competition. Cameron Gayleard is a proud Métis from the Rural Municipality of St. Andrews, Manitoba. Cameron is currently a varsity athlete competing for Canadian Mennonite University in Winnipeg, MB. Cameron was previously the captain of the Selkirk Royals AAAA Varsity Boys Volleyball team as well as a bronze medalist in the Volleyball Manitoba’s Beach Provincials. “Having someone with the level of respect leadership, skills and admiration of his peers that Cameron has is unique these days,” said Jeff Scarcello, Royals club coach. Lyric Atchison is a First Nation athlete from the Squamish Nation. Lyric is currently a starting line varsity rugby player for the University of British Columbia and played on Team Canada U20 Team at the 2019 Tri-Nations Cup. “Lyric has true commitment to bettering herself and the others around her and sees sport as a vehicle to do so,” said Darcy Patterson of BC Rugby. “Lyric’s ambition to pursue higher level sport are also accompanied by her drive and dedication to excel academically.” The two national recipients will be recognized as award winners at Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony [...]
